Sale of the Century

Fancy some Pharos or a fling with Ivanhoe? Carried away on a Cube? Going Over the Hill to Oakville for Polo at Grassmere to watch  the Hunt Club in Blue Jerseys?

No, we haven’t had too much sun this summer, these names are just part of our lives and have been for more years than we might like to remember. Need a clue?
How about “Crazy about Cornish Kitchen Ware” or “Dotty on Domino”?
Yes, you’ve got it, they are all the names of ranges of pottery once produced by the family firm of T. G. Green and now that the Museum and Cornish Café are closed, the family have decided the time has come to clear out the cupboards and let the old, family friends find new homes.

The Green family are based in Hampshire – which was where the Cornish Ware Café was first opened in 1998 and a Museum was set up to illustrate the factory’s varied output from the 1880’s to present day.  The range was vast but it was really the fresh, blue and white striped kitchen ware that first brightened our grand parent’s lives in the 30’s that has caught the public’s imagination.

Richard Dennis and Paul Atterbury – of Antiques Roadshow and Andy Pandy fame, who were both collectors and enthusiasts of T G Green’s pottery, collaborated in 1996 to publish CORNISH WARE, a History of the Factory.  The book, complete with it’s blue and white striped cover was a huge success and the second edition, some five year’s later and sporting a multi coloured, striped jacket, has proved the definitive reference source.

Many of the pieces illustrated were from the Green family or Museum and Derek Green – the great Grandson of the original founder, will be selling these at his old shop this November.  While some pieces are pristine, many are cracked and crazed but may be the only examples left from the much loved factory and from the Museum. From pounds to pennies, there is something for everyone.

When:  Saturday 7th November 2009

Where:  63 High Street, Hartley Wintney, Hampshire RG27 8HL

Sadly........... The T.G. Green Factory site has fallen into massive disrepair and has now been placed on the "High Risk" register at English heritage. The following story was in The Burton Mail. We must lobby South Derbyshire Council to do everything possible to save this historic building and the fabulous four bottle kilns.
WE WANT TO SAVE THIS IMPORTANT BUILDING.
Please, please HELP US and write to:

!!!!!!!!!!!  NEWS EXCLUSIVE - HOT OFF THE PRESS !!!!!!!!!!!!! 09/04/08
The TG Green Cornishware factory in Church Gresley, Derbyshire was closed last June, and the tableware will now be made in China.
Chomette Dornberger managing director Charles Rickards told HousewaresLive.net: "We're going into production in May, and product will be available in the UK from July or August.
"We're starting with 55 SKUs of just the blue to start with, and we haven't decided whether we're going to carry on production of the other colours."
However, he added: "We're having conversations with designers about new shapes and concepts for launch towards the end of spring next year."
In the meantime, he said, product availability was "limited at the moment but we've acquired all the stock. We've got 70% of the Cornish Blue lines, we've got seconds and good stocks of all the other colours."
Although the main production will be in China, Chomette Dornberger is also looking to open a micro-factory in the UK. Rickards said it could be near the old Church Gresley site or in Cornwall itself.
"It will probably employ 20 to 25 people and will involve having a factory shop and tourist centre where people can actually see the product being made," he said. David French, former chief executive of The Tabletop Group, told HousewaresLive.net that he was "very disappointed" that Cornish Blue was now to be made overseas.
"It's an iconic British design and it should have stayed in the UK, but it wasn't to be the case," he said. However, he added that he understood that the cost of manufacturing in the UK made it unfeasible.

The T G Green Factory and site is "For Sale" and advertised for "Development Potential". There is already a large number of new houses being built in Church Gresley and we wonder if it will be used for more! The Security man at the site was telling us on Saturday that the Bottle Kilns are listed. Parts of the old original factory are in a bad state of repair and lead and electrical copper wires  have been stripped by thieves. How heart breaking is this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well god knows whats happening. First we were told by an external source T G Green and Cornishware Brands had been sold for six months before going into administration to a company in Sheffield.  According to the administrators the name etc etc is still for sale at a costly price but with several interested parties.  If you know any further info on this please get in touch so we can publish it first on this web site. This is not just for our interest, but for all avid collectors and interested parties.
